Two SSC contracts were awarded by R4D2 and PWD to Malekula Timber to construct a 267-meter fibre reinforced concrete pavement. The contractor managed to complete both contracts on the 14th of September 2020 resulting in 267-meter concrete pavement, 3metres wide and 0.5m side drains on both sides.
The road from Lawa to the Airport is about 10 km. This road has been gravelled some years ago by PWD. On many occasions, the gravel washes away and the road becomes a bottle neck during wet weather. The road section comprises many steep sections, which make transport impossible during the rainy season.
This intervention has made village life much easier now that communities have continuous access to clinics, schools, the Airport and markets. Local farmers have reliable access to deliver their products from the farm to the Market House. Villagers at Lawa and Lorlow were very happy to see one of the main bottle necks resolved. They performed a custom ceremony to acknowledge PWD team and the contractor celebrating this great achievement.
Total cost of this activity is VuV 9.7M at completion.
