ID154: Traffic Data Collection (TDC) 2020 – Second round of data collection throughout Vanuatu after 3 years

Eight (8) TDC surveyors and one (1) field coordinator received their training on the 3rd November by the Roads for Development Program Phase 2 (R4D2) and Public Works Department (PWD) staff. Six of the TDC surveyors are male and two are female.

After the training and pretesting of methodology, they were dropped off on the following day on their various counting locations to carry out the survey for another two consecutive days before moving to their new locations. According to their schedule, they have 15 working days to complete 32 counting locations. The proposed date to complete this survey exercise is on the 20th November and for the following week, the field coordinator will assist the Road Inventory Management System (RIMS) Officer for data entry and filing support.

The RIMS Officer, Graham Waka said, “The TDC results will help PWD with its planning and decision making in terms of roads improvement prioritization and so forth.  Collecting road traffic information is very important to PWD, as it will be used to classify the roads by considering the criteria of traffic volumes.  PWD’s long-term intention is to carry out TDC after two years on a continuous basis to make comparative assessments, identifying trends, and verify adequacy for our engineering and managerial decision-making. The TCD survey will be conducted in selected Islands throughout Vanuatu and will be for motorized and non – motorized traffic”.

The government of Australia through the Roads for Development Program Phase 2 (R4D2) is funding this Traffic Data Survey. The traffic data counting in Efate rural and urban has commenced from 3 November and will continue until the 20th November 2020.
