The main arterial road to Letakeren has two major steep sections. The first section is 235m and the second is 250m, which has been earthen over most of its life. The whole road section comprises of many steep sections, which make transport impassable during the rainy season. This area is a heavy agricultural land thus market accessibility was also compromised in wet weather.
In 2019 PWD conducted a review of the Letakeren road, it was determined the road provides economic benefit to the Province but has been neglected since 2017. Despite having other FRC pavement contracts in other locations, it was agreed to have two contracts for FR Concrete pavements. So what was added was 195 m concrete pavement and 1 culvert yet to be completed. The Total cost of this activity is VuV 4.2M at completion.
With the FRC, it is now passable in all weather. Access to services and markets is now established. This intervention meets the Public Roads Policy Priority Areas 3 Road improvements to increase basic rural access.
Vehicle/Transport owners have raised their appreciation. The Councillor has praised PWD for this intervention, as it was their long wish to have this road improved. The intervention is, long-lasting, low maintenance and another ‘non- core’ road is safe.
