The construction of FRC concrete pavement at Amok Hill in the Northwest Malekula in Malampa province has been successfully completed by a small-scale contractor with funding support from R4D2. This road has been gravelled some years back by PWD but after some time, gravel has been eroded downhill, making transport impossible during the rainy season.
After completing the construction of 220 meters FRC pavement at Amok hill, farmers are now able to transport their agricultural products from the farm down to the primary market in Lakotoro.
Mr Jerry Hosea, the Area Administrator of North West Malekula, confirmed that "there used to be a creek at Amok Hill. During rainy weather, the land cruisers cannot access the road because of the heavy rain that created huge holes. It is also a very steep hill which becomes very risky during rainy weather. During high tides, the saltwater joins with the river and the road section becomes very deep for students when crossing the school path. However, with this completion of FRC concrete pavement, vehicles can now access the road without problem, and students can walk safely to attend school".
