ID218: 700m Graveled Road on Herald Bay to Isia Road on Futuna Island, Tafea

PWD, with support from R4D2 has implemented a road gravelling project on Herald Bay.  The gravel road from Herald Bay to Isia was 1.43 kilometres long. Nathan Tabi, Tafea Division Manager said “Before the earthen road was inaccessible especially during rainy season”

PWD engaged a small-scale contractor (SSC) who received capacity building and advise from the R4D2 advisors and completed the gravelled road. The SCC engaged the communities in community-based contracts. These community contractors successfully assisted the completion of the 1.43 km gravelled road in December 2020.

Mrs Evlyn Enos, a female shop owner, said that before she had to walk down to the main anchorage and climb up the stairs carrying her goods from the ship to her shop. With the gravelled road, she  can now use the land cruiser to transport her cargo from the anchorage to her shop.
